Prime Minister Modi has changed his social media profile picture to tiranga / tricolor. He wrote “It is a special 2nd August today! At a time when we are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, our nation is all set for #HarGharTiranga, a collective movement to celebrate our Tricolour. I have changed the DP on my social media pages and urge you all to do the same.”
Meanwhile, opposition Congress has party participated in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign by changing the profile to an image of the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru holding the ‘tiranga’ in his hands. Nehru’s image is in black and white and Tiranga is in its original color.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched ‘Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiayan’ (Tricolor in Every House Campaign). The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is connection with 75 years of India’s Independence. The campaign is under the broader one year celebration of 75th Independence year named ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
The ‘har ghar tiranga’ campaign involves hoisting or displaying the national flag in homes from August 13 to 15. Prime Minister Modi also encouraged citizens to put ‘tiranga’ Indian flag as social media profile picture from August 2 to 15.
The campaign also has a provision to ‘pin a flag’ at your geographical location through https://harghartiranga.com. You may also post a selfie with tiranga in the same website. This novel exercise is going to fill the Indian map with ‘tiranga’ making it a beautiful sight to watch. The Government of India is aiming at building up patriotism and pride of being an Indian.
August 2 is significant as it is the birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya. He is considered the designer of Indian national flag. On August 2 Prime Minister Modi had tweeted “I pay homage to the great Pingali Venkayya on his birth anniversary. Our nation will forever be indebted to him for his efforts of giving us the Tricolour, which we are very proud of. Taking strength and inspiration from the Tricolour, may we keep working for national progress.”
The Indian Flag popularly known as ‘tiranga’ three equal, parallel and rectangular stripes of colors. The top stripe is saffron (kesari), middle stipe of white and the bottom stripe of green color. In the middle of the flag on the white stripe, a blue-colored ‘ashoka chakra’ / ‘dharma chakra’ or ‘wheel of law’ is placed. It has 24 spikes.
The saffron color denotes courage and sacrifice. White shows purity and truth. Green color signifies faith and fertility. The blue color of the ‘ashoka chakra’ “denotes boundless sky and fathomless sea.”
The Indian flag was originally designed by Sister Nivedita in 1904. She was an Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda. That flag had only red and yellow colors. ‘Bande Mataram’ was written in Bengali script on the flag. The flag signified freedom struggle and yellow marked victory.
Then in 1921 Pingali Venkayya from Machlipatnam, Andhra Pradesh designed a tricolor flag. It had three equal stips of blue, yellow and red. In 1931, ‘swaraj’ flag came into existence. It had saffron, white and green colors as ‘tiranga’ has it now. Mahatma Gandhi is considered to have designed the Swaraj flag.
Recently on 15 January 2022 Indian Army unveiled the world’s largest ‘tiranga’ in Jaisalmer. It was made of Khadi and measurements came to 33,750 sq.ft.
The tricolor had become a ceremonial symbol of our victory in war, sports matches, or celebrations. Wars such as India-Pakistan War of 1965, Operation Vijay of Kargil in 1999 saw tiranga being lifted high. Tiranga can be seen in bollywood movies such as ‘shershah’, ‘Border’, ‘Uri’, etc. Tiranga and national anthem was made mandatory in movie halls by courts in the recent past. Commonwealth Games 2022 have seen Indian athletes raising tiranga in international stages.
The national flag ‘tiranga’ was traditionally made in ‘khadi’. Now, the National Flag can be handspun, handwoven or machine-made in materials such as cotton, polyester, wool, silk or khadi .The government has also published list of vendors to purchase national flag ‘tiranga’.
The national flag should be hoisted and displayed by following the prescribed norms in Flag Code of India. The flag should be hoisted horizontally and saffron stripe should always be on top. The flag should not touch the ground or trail in water.
